1. Introduction:

The increasing diversity of religious beliefs and practices in today’s globalized world calls for the promotion of religious tolerance and harmony. In many societies, religion remains a powerful force that shapes cultural, social, and political life. However, religious intolerance and conflict continue to pose challenges to peaceful coexistence, both locally and internationally. To address these pressing issues, the Department of Sociology at CKB College, Teok, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized a Concept and Knowledge-based Discussion on 4th October, 2024, on the topic "Advocating for Religious Tolerance and Harmony on an International Scale." This event targeted the students of the BA 3rd Semester, aiming to promote a deeper understanding of religious diversity, tolerance, and the need for global peace.

This report details the objectives, proceedings, outcomes, and recommendations from the discussion, which emphasized the importance of interfaith dialogue and collective efforts in fostering global harmony.

2. Objectives of the Discussion:

The discussion was designed to fulfill several key objectives, including:

  • To promote an understanding of religious tolerance: The session aimed to define religious tolerance and highlight its importance in creating peaceful societies. Students were encouraged to reflect on how religious tolerance allows for the peaceful coexistence of different faith communities.
  • To explore the need for global religious harmony: Given the international dimensions of religious conflicts, the discussion sought to emphasize the need for advocating religious harmony on a global scale. Students were introduced to examples of interfaith initiatives and peace-building efforts across the world.
  • To encourage critical thinking about religious conflicts: The event aimed to challenge students to think critically about the causes of religious intolerance and conflict. By examining historical and contemporary cases of religious tensions, the discussion aimed to foster a deeper understanding of how these conflicts can be resolved.
  • To inspire students to take part in interfaith dialogue and peace initiatives: One of the key objectives was to inspire students to become advocates for religious tolerance and harmony, both within their own communities and on an international platform.

3. Key Themes and Conceptual Framework:

The session provided a comprehensive overview of the concept of religious tolerance, which can be understood as the acceptance of different religious beliefs and practices, even when they differ from one's own. Religious tolerance goes beyond mere acceptance; it entails fostering a culture of respect and understanding between people of different faiths. The discussion also addressed the need for religious harmony, which emphasizes not only tolerance but also cooperation and dialogue between religious communities.

The following key themes were explored during the discussion:

  • Religious Pluralism: The facilitator explained the concept of religious pluralism, where multiple religious traditions coexist peacefully, each maintaining its unique identity while contributing to the larger fabric of society. The students were introduced to examples of societies that have successfully fostered religious pluralism, such as India, where multiple religions have coexisted for centuries.
  • Causes of Religious Intolerance: The discussion explored the root causes of religious intolerance, including historical grievances, political manipulation of religious identity, and socioeconomic inequalities. Students examined how religious intolerance often stems from a lack of understanding or fear of other beliefs, and how such misunderstandings can be exacerbated by external factors such as media portrayals and political rhetoric.
  • The Role of Interfaith Dialogue: Interfaith dialogue was highlighted as a critical tool in promoting religious tolerance and harmony. The discussion emphasized the importance of dialogue between religious leaders, practitioners, and communities as a way to build mutual understanding and resolve conflicts peacefully.
  • Global Efforts for Religious Harmony: The facilitator introduced students to international efforts aimed at fostering religious harmony, including organizations like the United Nations, which promotes interfaith cooperation through initiatives such as the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week. Examples of successful global peace-building efforts involving multiple faiths, such as the efforts of the Interfaith Peacebuilding Initiative in Africa, were also discussed.

4. Detailed Proceedings of the Discussion:

The discussion was structured into several segments, each focusing on a specific aspect of religious tolerance and harmony. This structure allowed for an in-depth exploration of the topic, followed by interactive participation from the students.

  1. Opening Remarks and Introduction to the Topic:
The session began with a brief introduction by the Head of the Department of Sociology, who welcomed the students and outlined the significance of the topic in today’s world. The Head emphasized that religious tolerance and harmony are not just philosophical ideals but are crucial to ensuring peace and stability in diverse societies. He noted the increasing global challenges posed by religious intolerance and how students can contribute to addressing these issues.
  2. Definition and Importance of Religious Tolerance:
The facilitator provided a comprehensive definition of religious tolerance, explaining that it involves respecting and valuing the beliefs of others, even if one does not agree with them. Students were encouraged to consider how religious tolerance differs from mere coexistence, as it requires active engagement and respect for religious diversity. The facilitator stressed that religious tolerance is fundamental to safeguarding human rights and promoting peace in multicultural societies.
  3. Interactive Discussion on Religious Conflicts:
In this segment, students were invited to discuss examples of religious conflicts from both history and current events. The facilitator presented case studies from different parts of the world, including the sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, the religious tensions in the Middle East, and the communal conflicts in South Asia. Students analyzed these conflicts to identify the underlying causes of religious intolerance and the role of external factors such as politics, economic instability, and media bias in fueling these conflicts.
  4. Promoting Religious Harmony through Interfaith Dialogue:
The discussion then shifted to the role of interfaith dialogue in promoting religious harmony. The facilitator explained that interfaith dialogue involves open and respectful communication between people of different religions, aimed at building trust, understanding, and cooperation. Several examples of successful interfaith initiatives were highlighted, including the Parliament of the World's Religions and the interfaith cooperation programs led by the United Nations. Students were encouraged to think about how interfaith dialogue could be applied in their own communities to promote understanding and resolve conflicts.
  5. Group Activity – Analyzing Global Efforts for Religious Tolerance:
The students were divided into groups and assigned different countries or regions where religious intolerance or conflict has been prevalent. Each group was tasked with researching the efforts made by these countries to promote religious tolerance and harmony. They analyzed global initiatives, such as the efforts by international organizations, NGOs, and local communities to address religious intolerance. The groups then presented their findings, showcasing examples from countries like South Africa, the United States, and India, where interfaith dialogue and reconciliation efforts have made significant progress.
  6. Open Forum Discussion – Personal Reflections and Ideas:
The discussion concluded with an open forum where students shared their personal reflections on the topic. Many students expressed how the session had deepened their understanding of religious tolerance and the need for harmony in an increasingly interconnected world. Some shared their personal experiences of religious diversity and how interfaith dialogues had positively impacted their own communities. The facilitator encouraged students to think of practical ways they could advocate for religious tolerance in their daily lives, both within the college environment and in the wider world.

5. Key Outcomes and Reflections:
