The identity of the Assamese people in a great historical tradition formed out of the conglomeration of the varied tribes who since time immemorial had arrived in the territorial -cultural complex of Assam as it is known today. Earlier when the dynastic or legendary routes of history had been beginning ,this land was known as Kamaraupa -Pragjyotishpura and those names had also been mentioned in the epics and the first  famous book of the political economy Kautilya's Arthasastra .The Barman dynasty and its connecting link with the north Indian politics gave a new groundwork to the formation of the regional cultural basis of the Kamarupa with a strong cultural context of the main land India and since the rule of the Salastambha and the Pala kings , the name of Kamarupa as the distinct cultural entity had taken a new shape . Throughout the thirteenth century , the political structure had given strong support to the formation of a distinct entity through cultural activities and with the establoshement of the Ahom dynasty that process had taken a new shape. The nationality question had been taking a deep shape with the arrival of the Colonialists like the Britishers and through their modern systems of adminitration and education , the mewly formed midlle class tried to ventilate their demands in new forms of public sphere . Prof. Sharma very beautifully summed up the distinctions and the unique character of the unified notion of the nationality .
