Webinar on ‘Cholera Among the Tea Plantation Workers in Colonial Assam’
The resource person for the webinar was Mr.Kishore Goswami , assistant professor in the department of history ,J.B.College,Jorhat (autonomous).
The webinar was held in order to discuss the impacts of the colonial capitalistic projects in the underdeveloped economy of Assam since the second half of the nineteenth century when the large bulk of the labourers had been recruited for the newly established tea plantation of Assam. The new discovery of tea had pushed the importance of the land as lucrative region for commercial exploitation of the natural resources which eventually brought into focus the question of the labour as the disciplining those for the sole purpose aggrandizing their enterprises around the tea industry .Not only the tea industry compensated the loss incurred  in the  Chinese commerce but it established the successful journey of the tea plantation as one of the most important commodities of commerce in the colonial network of trade. The legal enslavement of the recruited workers in the enclave set up of the tea estate and lack of proper supervision of the work field in turn brought untold miseries to the lives of those voiceless people who had arrived in the new land of imagined fortune without the trace of any real fortune. The unhygienic living conditions and lack of sufficient medical care had created a great havoc by creating the epidemics which brought the huge mass of death due to cholera.
