Introduction
The Department of History, C.K.B. College, Teok, organized a field trip to Sivasagar on March 22, 2024, for its students. The purpose of this trip was to provide students with an immersive learning experience by exploring various historical sites that they study in their academic curriculum.
Historical Sites Visited
During the trip, the students visited several significant historical sites, which are detailed below:
Joysagar Dol Complex
- This complex includes multiple temples and monuments that reflect the architectural prowess of the Ahom dynasty.
Ghanashyam Palace
- The home of the Ahom architect Ghanasyamuddin Khanikar who was brought to Assam by the Ahom King Swargadeo Rudra Singha (c. 1696-1714).
Fakuwa Dol, Ranganath Dol, and Hara Gauri Dol
- These temples provided insights into the religious practices and artistic expressions of the Ahom period.
Talatal Ghar
- A seven-storied palace, including underground tunnels, exemplifying the strategic and architectural ingenuity of the Ahoms.
Shiva Dol, Vishnu Dol, and Devi Dol
- These prominent temples are dedicated to Hindu deities and are important cultural landmarks.
Sivasagar Tank and Joysagar Tank
- These large man-made tanks are marvels of medieval engineering and were crucial for the water management systems of the time.
Rang Ghar
- The first amphitheater in Asia, used for sports and cultural events, reflecting the recreational aspects of the Ahom society.
Learning Outcomes
The field trip enabled students to:
- Gain firsthand experience of the historical sites they study in their textbooks.
- Understand the architectural styles, cultural significance, and historical contexts of the Ahom dynasty's monuments.
