The study of a language’s grammatical system is referred to as grammar. The total set of rules
that regulate how words are paired to produce utterances is referred to as the grammatical
system. The purpose of theoretical grammar is to provide a theoretical analysis of the
grammatical system of a language. Learning English grammar and using it correctly takes a lot
of time, effort, and practise. Mastering appropriate grammar is crucial because it provides insight
into the human mind and our enormous mental potential for language learning and knowledge.
Understanding grammar allows us to appreciate the qualities that make sentences and paragraphs
clear, engaging, joyful, and precise.
Tense is the most important aspect of English grammar, and no one can deny that it is also the
most difficult, with non-native learners spending a significant amount of time learning how to
understand and utilise it properly. Tense has been identified as the most difficult component for
second language learners in numerous studies. Some pupils are unsure of their ability to choose
the suitable tense forms, according to the results.
The aim of this study is to examine the faults that High School students make when using
English tenses. Students’ mistakes are analysed to see what’s wrong with their tenses. This
study’s main purpose is to investigate tense errors among high school students. Hanhchara High
School and Teok High School have been chosen as the study’s locations. The study will
investigate and evaluate tense errors among students in class IX and X at the chosen schools. The
research will attempt to identify tense errors made by pupils and offer remedies and suggestions
for avoiding them.

The objectives of the Study:
1. Investigate and analyze students' errors in English tenses.
2. Suggest solutions to the problem according to the nature of these errors.

Findings:
i) According to the findings of the investigation, pupils make several types of tenses errors. Apart from the challenges of the target language, the rationale for these errors could be due to a difference between learners native and target languages.
ii) Most of the students have confusion in the use of perfect tense.
iii) Students have much difficulty in the use of present perfect, present perfect continuous and past perfect continuous tense.
iv) Past perfect continuous tense was found to have big percentage of errors. The result demonstrates that majority of the students failed to choose the correct answer. Only 4% students of both the schools could put the verb in its correct form.
