The English language skills are increasingly important in helping individuals to</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">secure better jobs. But poor performance in such skills debars individuals to avail their</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">employability chances. In the present scenario, oral fluency is the key for securing better jobs</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">and carving out successful careers.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The aim of the proposed project is to explore the English communication abilities of high school</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">students and the opportunities provided to them to develop such abilities. As the proficiency in</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">English is related to job opportunities, initiatives must be taken from school level for the</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">betterment of communication skills of the students so that they can avail employment</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">opportunities in future. Therefore, this project seeks to examine the English communication</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">skills of the students along with the facilities and opportunities provided to them by the</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">institution for the development of English language proficiency for better employment</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">opportunities in future.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">This study will involve data collection through survey method in five different schools in Teok---</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">i) Teok Girls Higher Secondary School ii) Teok Jatiya Vidyalaya iii) Bonai High School iv)</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Bamunpukhuri High School v) Jogduar High School. To test the students’ oral fluency and their</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">reading, writing and listening skills, an examination was conducted in the selected schools. Two</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">sets of questionnaire (one set for the students of class IX&X and the other for the subject</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">teacher) were prepared to study the causes of problems in the English language learning process.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Objectives:</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">1. to explore the language proficiency of high school students and the opportunities provided to them to develop such abilities.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">2. to examine the teaching learning process in selected High Schools in Teok.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Findings:</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">1. Fear of making grammatical mistakes is a major hindrance for many students to acquire oral proficiency in English. Too much emphasis on grammatical correctness is a hindrance to develop communicative competency among students. Grammatical correctness is essential, but communicative ability demands more than grammatical correctness.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">2. In a monolingual context, the use of learners' first language for better acquisition of the second language cannot be denied. The use of L1 in second learning classroom can be accepted as a positive approach as cross-linguistic comparison will help developing the cognitive abilities of the learners.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "times new roman", serif; font-size: medium; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">3. Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities can help students to realize their full potential in every sphere of life.
