English as a second language is facing numerous problems in learning. The recent study is an attempt to probe into challenges for teaching and learning English as a second language in three selected schools in Teok. This study deeply looks into the obstacles faced by students in learning English. To carry out the proposed study, the project coordinators prepared two questionnaires for the purpose of collecting data. The main objectives of the study are: i) To identify the leading causes for difficulties in learning English as a second language in high school level. ii) To find out the significant difference, if any, in the causes of problems in learning English with regard to locality of school, teaching method, pupils' family background, parental education and the students' own initiatives. Findings: 1) It has been observed that many students are not completely familiar with even the very basic concept of grammar. Many students have confusion regarding the use of Tenses. Their inability to choose the correct alternative clearly indicates their low vocabulary range. Problems also surfaced in transformation of sentences. 2) Although some of the students could develeop the content of the paragraph; many of them failed to write a well-organised paragraph. 3) Although the paragraph chosen for dictation was a simple one; many students made spelling mistakes which clearly indicates that tyhey were not familiar with the common English words 4) Researchers found that lack of adequate English teachers is a matter of concern in the schools. To enhance the quality of English language learning, there is a need of recruitment of English subject based teachers. | ||
