Summary: -
For a special class on December 10, 2021, the English department of C.K.B. College, Teok invites Mr.
Uttam Boruah, an alumnus of the department who currently serves as an assistant professor in the English
department at Sivasagar College, Joysagar. The subject of psychoanalytic literary criticism was covered
in class. Using PPT, Mr. Boruah gives his students a presentation on the subject. He defines
psychoanalysis as a literary approach that tries to include some psychoanalytical tools into the analysis of
literary works.
Mr. Baruah draws attention to the fact that Sigmund Freud primarily formulated the psychological ideas
that are used in psychoanalytic literary criticism. Mr. Boruah explains that literary works, like dreams,
reveal the author’s hidden underlying desires and anxieties. Through the use of a few literary works as
examples, he demonstrates psychoanalytic approaches to literature and the use of psychological theory as
a yardstick for interpreting and assessing literary works.
The lecture was lively and exciting as Mr. Boruah gave clear explanations of the subject so that students
could quickly understand the fundamental presumptions of psychoanalytic literary criticism. During the
interactive session, he also responded to the students’ questions.
