On the
10th December at 8.40 p.m. we started our journey by bus from our
College campus to Amguri Railway Station. We reached the Station at 9.50 p.m.
and boarded the “Kamrup Express” at 10.23p.m. On the 11th December
we reached Guwahati at 8.30 a.m. and boarded the train, LohitExpres to Amritsar
at 4.55 p.m. the same day. We reached our much awaited destination Amritsar
with a lot of excitement on a very chilly day on the 13th December
at 11.30 a.m. The hotel manager at Hotel Fairway welcomed us and provided tea
and snacks. We were given large and spacious rooms which were shared by three
students each, and separate room for the teacher. We occupied our rooms and freshened up soon
to visit the places of historical interest. At the very first we visited the famous Golden
Temple which is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a
symbol of human brotherhood and equality. The entire top of the temple is made
of pure gold, adding to the beauty of the temple. To get to the temple, we had
to literally walk on water. The temple is surrounded by a manmade lake that
boasts of a lot of exotic fish in it. The
complex is the most important pilgrimage site in Sikhism and it is also called
Darbar Sahib. The next stop was the Partition Museum which
left us overawed with its amazing collection of stories, materials, and
documents related to the post-partition riots that followed the division of
British India. This was followed by a visit to
JallianwalaBagh, a public garden famous for the massacre of 1919 by the British
Army soldiers. We learnt about the historical aspect related to the
JallianwalaBagh. It was established in 1951 by the Government of India to
commemorate the massacre of peaceful celebrators, including unarmed women and
children, by the British occupying forces on the occasion of the Punjabi New
Year on April 13, 1919. The bullet marks
on the walls made us feel the gravity of the situation at that time. It is a
memorial of national importance. Our last stop was the Wagah Border, best
known for the elaborate ceremony that happens at the border gate, before the
sunset every day. We could feel our
patriotic fervor in its full spirit; we clapped and cheered for India. Wagah is
the boundary demarcating the territories of India and Pakistan upon the
Partition of India. The border ceremony of the flag lowering takes place in the
evening which is conducted by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan
Rangers On the 15th morning we left for Jaipur by the Amrisar Ajmer Express and
reached our destination at 3.00 p.m.on
the 16th December. Here too, we were given spacious rooms in the
hotel, Amber Palace which were shared by us according to our suitability. We were taken for site seeing to Jantar-Mantar,
where we were told about how in ancient days time was predicted and how they
studied about stars and planets. Knowledge about the working of a sundial was
an immensely interesting. Next we were taken to ‘City Palace’ where we
saw various artifacts, huge silver bowls, decorative vases, etc.which gave
knowledge of the local handicrafts. We
enjoyed the traditional food at lunchtime.
Next day, early in the morning we went to ‘Amber Fort’ in Jaipur, where
we saw the glass room and various artifacts. There were various costumes
displayed showcasing royal attire. We also took
a short and hurried look of renowned site the HawaMahal. Learning about the
Rajput architecture and the entire history of the Rajputs at the Amer Fort boosted
our mind with more firsthand knowledge. A view of the Mahals in the eveningwith lights was an out of the world experience. Next day, 18th evening we boarded
the Bikaneri Express for Guwahati, Assam. We reached Jorhat by bus at 8.00p.m.
on the 20th December. It is said that, Educational tours are about
imparting learning to provide a good base of actual hands-on experience of
history, we agree to the saying as we really learnt a lot from the trip. | ||
